Digitalization at Premium Level: BMW Relies on ekko

Paperless Shopfloor

Picking

Digital Labeling

BMW has been using the ekko platform to digitize its shop floor processes since 2020. With a vendor-neutral, industry-compatible solution, the automotive company is modernizing paper-based processes — worldwide.

1 Starting position

As part of a Europe-wide tender in 2020, BMW was looking for a platform to digitize paper-based processes — independent of the hardware manufacturer. The aim was to establish a scalable, highly available and future-proof solution that meets the Group's highest IT standards and can be rolled out worldwide.

2 Approach

ekko was able to assert itself with its open platform architecture. Since then, the solution has been further developed in close coordination with BMW IT: microservice architecture, Kubernetes clusters, zero downtime and maximum redundancy — especially for industrial applications on the shop floor. In 2024, the contract was extended for a further eight years.

3 Implementation & Outcome

Today, ekko is used in 12 BMW plants around the world. The platform supports use cases such as digital shelf lettering, digital transport lists and wireless pick-to-light — manufacturer-independent, flexible and secure. Manual expenses were massively reduced, error rates reduced and processes significantly streamlined. ekko is an integral part of the BMW Group's digitization strategy.
